Anxiety
about the incidence of violence in public places is
driving an increasing interest in the so-called 'New
York miracle' of Zero Tolerance policing. Most Australian
jurisdictions are broadening the powers available to
police, including the introduction of extended powers
for police to search for knives and move people on in
NSW.
This
seminar will critically examine the perceived need for
tougher laws and changes to police practice. It will
also address concerns about how the use of these powers
may effect police relations with groups targeted in
street policing operations, particularly young people.
